Republic Day: History
Despite gaining independence from British rule in 1947, India had still not gained the identity of a sovereign, secular socialist and democratic republic. It is noteworthy that the first session to draft the constitution of India was held on December 9, 1946. The Indian Constituent Assembly spent 2 years, 11 months and 17 days in completely drafting the constitution. Thereafter, the final session for the same was held on November 26, 1949, after which the Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly.
Thus, Constitution Day is observed in India on November 26 every year. Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar played a pivotal role in drafting the constitution of India and had also essayed the role of the head of the drafting committee. Hence, he gained the title of the 'Father of Indian Constitution'.
