Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has launched its own packaged drinking water, ‘JMI Jal’ and bakery products produced by trainees at the Livelihood Business Incubator (LBI) of the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) of the university.
These products are available for sale for teachers, staff and students through it newly established outlet, JMI Baker's and Cafe, on the campus.
Deans/Directors/Heads of Departments and Centres of the university have been requested to purchase these products for official meetings and functions.
CIE has been offering training programs for the underprivileged and school drop outs on different projects such as bakery training, tailoring, PET bottle making, packaged drinking water, paper disposables, computer hardware and networking, beautician training and digital printing under the ASPIRE scheme of Ministry of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Govt. of India for the last two years.
A new batch of 20 trainees has been enrolled earlier this month for eight-week training programs to train them in various skills at the LBI. A nominal fee of Rs.3000/- per student is charged for these courses.
Prof Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor JMI, who inaugurated the newly launched cafe in Jamia campus along with Finance Office, Sanjay Kumar said that in keeping its commitment to help the underprivileged and those who have not completed their university education for various reasons, this initiative will accord new avenues for self employment and entrepreneurship.
The endeavor is in line with the Central government's Skill India mission.
Zishan Husain Khan, Director, Centre For Innovation and Entrepreneurship said that these courses have not only become very popular in the university, but also in different parts of the country.
We normally admit twenty students in the course.
The minimum eligibility for admission in these courses is those who have studied from class VI to XII depending on the nature of the course.
Through these courses, one may get employment or may establish his/her own business.
Prof. Zishan Khan further added that students are not only being provided training for projects established by MSME but also at the university's business incubator which is a unique model for making the Center self-sustainable.
Two NGOs namely Cheshire Home, Delhi Unit and Veer Nari Shakti Resettlement Foundation have approached the Centre for imparting training to physically disabled and war/ martyr widows, their dependents, disabled soldiers to address livelihood support issues confronted by them.
The university is actively considering their request and may sign MoUs to facilitate it shortly.
