It will help your child stay focussed and will act as self check when he/she loses track of his/her goals. The world around our children is filled with distractions and temptations.
It’s not easy for our child to stay focussed. Children do not find it easy to set goals and stick to them for a long period of time.
On top of that when there are distractions at every corner, no one can really blame the little ones. But being parents, it’s our duty to pull them back and help them focus. Hence you must develop self management skills in your child from a young age.
Here are a few suggestions:
Goals: Help your child set goals. Make sure his/her plans are achievable and within your child’s capabilities. Support him/her to break up the goal into long and short term.
Plan: Help your child in making plans of his/her daily routine, so that he/she keeps moving closer to his/her goal on daily basis.
Reviews: Include weekly and monthly reviews in your planner. You must take out time to sit with your child once a week to review the long and short term goals.
Discuss Distractions: Distractions are bound to come on your child’s way. You cannot be there with him/her all the time to monitor.
It’s your child’s self management mechanism that will set him/her back on the right track again. For this to become a reality ensure that your child can see you as a friend and confidant, this will help him/her share the things happening in his/her life and seek counsel whenever required.
Don’t Be Judgemental: Friends are going to be very important for your child at this age. Friends come in all varieties. You may or may not like your child’s friends. But you must make absolutely sure not to judge them in front of your child. If there are things that bother you then they can be discussed with your child at a different place in a very subtle and non judgemental way. Remember the toughest and the most important thing at this point in time is to be friendly with your child.
Once you two are friends, you can support your child to have positive self concept and develop positive and productive self management habits. Support your child to exercise these habits consistently for a substantial period of time. Sooner or later it will become second nature to him/her. Then your child may stumble but will never fall.
